Amateur composers of classical music have a variety of platforms and opportunities to showcase their work. The Society of Composers Inc. is another avenue open to amateur composers. They have conferences where members submit works, which might be selected for performance. However, there are a few caveats:

They have calls for scores that are only for those members. Usually, limited to 10 or 15 minutes of performance time. Your work must match the forces on hand: brass quintet, solo violin, big band, flute, orchestra (rarely symphony orchestra). You have to attend the conference to hear your work, which means paying for hotel, Airbnb, meals, and travel. Not only do you have to pay to be a member, but you also have to pay a conference fee.

The positive aspects include hearing your work live, meeting other composers and performers, and having the opportunity to hear a broad range of music, from the fantastic to the horrendous. Everyone's opinion of what is good and what is horrendous shifts from person to person.

After two bad experiences, I stopped renewing my membership. However, for those who are passionate and dedicated, attending these conferences can still be a valuable experience.
