Can You Listen to Black Metal and Still Be a Strong Believer in Humanity?

I enjoy a lot of black metal and consider myself an advocate for humanity. My hunch is that misanthropy often stems from depression and self-hatred. This is based on interpersonal experiences and conversations I’ve had with people who hold such views.

Understanding Human Beliefs

Let's address the term 'a strong believer in humanity.' If you mean that most humans share an overall goodness, you might not see the magnitude of harm the human species has inflicted on both itself and the planet. We have exploited nearly every natural resource the Earth has to offer, and we've committed atrocities, proving that humans are often the worst among all creatures.

We've created wars, diseases/viruses (including those that are currently prevalent), and even death itself. Despite all this, many believe in a deity or deities. These deities are often no better than humanity, and their words, as written in ancient texts, lead to discrimination based on sexual preference, gender, and even the choice to have an abortion. We have slaughtered thousands over race and national heritage, while allowing hunger to continue in third-world countries.

Yet, amidst this chaos, a select few like you still hold a strong belief in the inherent goodness of humanity. I find this deeply intriguing.

Black Metal and Emotional Catharsis

First, it's important to clarify that listening to black metal doesn't necessarily equate to a lack of humanitarian beliefs. In fact, studies show that people who enjoy violent or intense music are often the most peaceful individuals. When immersed in music, one tends to release stress, anger, and any violent thoughts.

Black metal serves as mood music for me, and I don't necessarily share the thoughts of the artists who create it. Music is an emotional outlet that allows us to process our feelings and find solace in the chaos of life. Listening to intense music can be a therapeutic process, helping individuals confront and manage their emotions.

Freedom of Choice

Lastly, it's everyone's choice to listen to the music they enjoy. Whether it's black metal, death metal, or even Justin Bieber pop music, each genre has its supporters. The idea that we are all going to 'hell' doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy our lives. In the end, it’s about making the most of the time we have, whether through music, art, or any other form of expression.

We shouldn't allow negative perceptions or stereotypes to dictate our beliefs and values. Whether you listen to black metal or not, it doesn’t detract from your belief in humanity. In a world filled with challenges, it’s important to hold on to the hope and goodness that exists in every human being.
