Discovering Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple: A Journey into Rock History
From the mid-50s through the early 70s, Rock music exploded with legendary bands and incredible musicians. Two of the most impactful bands during this era were Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. I, like many others, discovered their music through the tide of musical exploration that defined my youth.
Early Exposure to Rock Music
My exposure to rock music began in the mid-50s through the influence of my parents. They were big fans of artists like Elvis Presley, whose music filled our household, alongside other genres like Big Band, Doo Wop, Country, and Easy Listening. It wasn’t long before the emergence of The Beatles in 1964 set off a musical revolution. Suddenly, rock bands like The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Who, and Led Zeppelin became the soundtrack to my youth. Each band brought a unique sound that captivated young minds.
Discovering Led Zeppelin
One of the most memorable ways I discovered Led Zeppelin was through my older cousin. At the age of 13, on my 13th birthday in 1969, a cousin who was three years older than me brought home Led Zeppelin’s first album. They placed it on my turntable, turned up the volume, and told me to sit back and be prepared to 'get my mind blown.' The first song, 'Good Times Bad Times,' was a perfect introduction to the band's heavy metal blues sound.
Led Zeppelin's music was infectious, with Jimmy Page's exceptional guitar riffs, John Bonham's powerful drumming, John Paul Jones' deep bass lines, and Robert Plant's lyrically rich, soulful voice. I was hooked immediately, and that moment of discovery has remained a cherished memory ever since.
Deep Purple: The Contender
Another iconic band that emerged in 1968 was Deep Purple. I initially discovered their music through the song 'Hush,' which I heard during my father's car ride. While 'Hush' was a strong start, the later Deep Purple album 'Machine Head' from 1972 solidified their place in my music collection. This album, with its unadulterated rock sound, featured classic tracks like 'Highway Star,' 'Pictures of Home,' and 'Space Truckin’.'
Enduring Impact and Influence
Both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple's music continues to influence and inspire countless musicians and fans. Their albums, like Led Zeppelin's 'II' and Deep Purple's 'Machine Head,' remain staples in my extensive 5000 plus album collection. Even after decades, their music remains timeless, and I continue to enjoy their classics, especially when I need a break from my current work or hobbies.
Personal Reflections
As I look back on my journey through the rich tapestry of rock music, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple stand out as cornerstones. Whether it's their innovative sound, their enduring influence, or the emotional connection their music continues to bring, these bands have left an indelible mark on my life. Their music was more than just notes and lyrics; it was a soundtrack to my life's journey.
My current tastes have evolved, shifting towards roots music and classical organ and piano. However, no matter where my musical interests take me, I find myself constantly drawing upon the foundations laid by bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Their legacy lives on, and their music will always hold a special place in my heart.
