Discovering the Oldest Living Musicians You Listen To
It's not often we delve into the age of the artists we love, but every once in a while, the curiosity piques. I recently pulled up a search, only to discover that both Eric Clapton and Neil Young, two of my favorite musicians, are 76 years old. This realization sparked a deeper reflection on the musicians I continue to enjoy, both past and present.
Classic Rock Legends
When it comes to living musicians, I'm particularly fond of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and other artists from their era. These groups have a timeless quality that continues to captivate audiences decades after their initial rise to fame. Many of these musicians are hitting or just past 80 years of age, a testament to their enduring talent and passion.
Legendary Performances
Years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Ravi Shankar perform live. At 80, he was undoubtedly the greatest virtuoso I had ever witnessed. The concert was a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of musicianship. Similarly, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover of Deep Purple are both 76, and their latest album was released in August 2020. They are among the oldest active musicians that I listen to, alongside a few others who maintain a similar age range.
Ageless Talent
While many of the musicians from my childhood and early adulthood have joined the ranks of the deceased, some remain as vibrant as ever. Tony Bennett and Willie Nelson are still active, and I enjoy their performances whenever I catch a concert or TV show. A couple of years ago, I attended a 40-minute one-man show by Kris Kristofferson. Despite not being a huge fan at the time, his act left a lasting impression, sparking a newfound appreciation for his work.
When it comes to music I still enjoy on CDs, the list is vast and includes legends like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. The list could go on and on, and unless you are a purist, there's no clear stopping point. Each of these musicians has left an indelible mark on the music world.
Current Actives
Phi Lesh and Bob Weir are still performing, and I recently saw the Eagles, although they are not as old as some of the other artists mentioned. Bryan Ferry and Iggy Pop remain active and captivating. Ferry, in particular, continues to stun with his performances and works. I even managed to meet him once in Berlin, and despite my initial worries about his immediate future, he proved me wrong. His recent performance of Lust for Life was a reminder of why he remains such a vital force in the music industry.
These artists, among many others, exemplify the power of timeless talent and the enduring passion of musicians. Whether you're a fan of rock, jazz, or any other genre, there's something for everyone in this rich and varied musical landscape.
