From Humming to Making a Song: Mukund Rajagopa’s Music Journey

Mukund Rajagopa, a seasoned musician with over six decades of music creation, reflects on his humble beginnings and the transformation of simple humming into meaningful songs. This journey has been marked by personal milestones and a lifelong dedication to his craft.

Early Beginnings and Staff Paper

With over 60 years of experience in music, Rajagopa shares how he started writing music. 'I have been writing music for about 60 years, and I can't remember the first "song" I wrote as opposed to other more common forms of music,' he explains. However, he can vividly describe the process he used to compose his first piece. On a sheet of staff paper, he marked the time and key signature, and then meticulously plotted the notes in their proper positions and durations. He elaborates, 'I would have put the lyrics between the vocal part and the piano part dynamics in between the two piano staffs and above the vocal staff.'

Discovering the Power of Humming

Interestingly, Rajagopa never knew he could sing until he was 23. This discovery came when he moved to a different city and started humming Bollywood songs. His Kannada-speaking roommates used to compliment his singing, which was a pleasant surprise. However, it was a significant moment when he sang a popular Kannada song at a karaoke party. Stefan explains, 'I was singing with a microphone and music for the first time and I had so many people who came and complemented me. Most of them did not even understand the language... This is when I started taking music a little more seriously.'

The Path to Professional Songwriting

From then on, Rajagopa began writing songs in Hindi, a language he was not very fluent in but one he passionately composed music for. He would often use events in his life or the environment around him as inspiration for his songs. 'I would often make songs from events in my life or surrounding me. Then, I would try adding a tune to my story,' he shares.

One particular song, inspired by his trek to Kumara Parvath, a famous trekking spot in the Western Ghats, gained popularity among friends. A friend who ran a studio heard this song and helped Rajagopa record it. The result was a nearly professional-sounding song that Rajagopa values greatly. This journey taught him the satisfaction of blending words and melody to create something meaningful.

Crafting and Sharing Music

Despite his busy schedule, Rajagopa always returns to writing whenever he has some free time. 'I have made several songs after this... but when I have I always come back to writing, planning out my content on Soundcloud,' Mukund reflects. His dedication to sharing his musical journey through social media platforms is a testament to the impact of music in his life.

Mukund Rajagopa’s story is a inspiring tale of how passion and perseverance can take one from simple humming to professional songwriting. His journey is not just about the music but also about the joy and satisfaction of connecting with others through his art.
