Maximizing Your Outward Bound Singapore OBS Experience: Tips and Life Hacks
My Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) experience was one of the most challenging but fulfilling things I've ever gone through. The journey is both mentally and physically demanding, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can be an incredible growth experience. Here are some tips and life hacks that can help you make the most of your OBS experience.
Putting Effort into Bonding
Your group at OBS will consist of individuals from various schools, and it's natural to gravitate towards familiar faces. However, this is where the real challenge begins. The key is to choose to bond and support each other rather than compete against one another. Remember, you'll be sleeping, cooking, trekking, and navigating together. Make the effort to enhance your group's chemistry.
Staying the Course: Don't Be the Deadweight
Day 3 and 4 will be the most challenging parts of your journey. Think about carrying a 20 kg backpack and trekking for 8 hours. Trust me, you won't be alone. The instructors won't provide any assistance, and there's a good chance you might get lost. Breaking the pace to rest will only set you back further. Keep your spirits high, maintain a positive attitude, and find ways to engage your teammates. Sing, play games, and use your willpower to push on.
Digesting the Prunes: Hygiene and Discipline
Avoid eating the prunes at all costs. If you must eat them, be prepared to dig a hole and relieve yourself in darkness with minimal lighting. Make sure to stay hygienic. Having your period during OBS is fortunately rare, but it's still a thought. Plan accordingly and always be prepared for any situation.
Protecting Your Skin from the Sun
Remember to Slather on Your Sunblock. Some people neglected their sun protection, leading to unbearable peeling skin. To avoid this, make sure to apply plenty of sunblock. Always be prepared for extreme weather conditions and unexpected situations.
Keeping Cool with Prickly Heat Powder
Prickly Heat Powder: Essential for Tent Living. If you don't know what prickly heat powder is, now is the time to find out. This powder keeps you cool and dry, especially when the air in your tent is humid. With so many ants at Pulau Ubin, it's crucial to sprinkle it generously on your gear to prevent an infestation.
Water Shoes for Dry Trekking
Water Shoes Rescue Your Footwear. Remember, trekking isn't the only thing you'll do. You'll also spend 6 hours kayaking from one end of Pulau Ubin to the other. Invest in water shoes to protect your sports shoes. Trust me, your feet will thank you later. Wearing regular shoes would damage your expensive sports shoes, and the smell might linger for days.
Challenging Yourself Out of Your Comfort Zone
The OBS course exposes you to high elements, poor cooking, and experiences you've never encountered before. Showers will be a luxury, and you'll have to learn to adapt quickly. Don't whine; instead, take the opportunities to grow resilient and develop leadership skills. Emotional strength is just as important as physical strength.
Liquid Gold: Spreading Ponchos for Dry Camping
Spread Your Ponchos at Camp. When you get to camp, you'll be sleeping in tents every night. Even if it doesn't rain, water can seep into the tent's base, leading to a wet night. You'll be issued a yellow nylon cloth called a poncho. Spread two at the base of your tent every night and sleep on them. This simple hack will keep you dry, ensuring a restful night's sleep.
Final Thoughts
Remember, OBS is a test of both your physical and mental limits. It's an experience that will impact you in various ways, and it's okay to cry when you're pushed to your limits. Losing your temper is not. By following these tips and life hacks, you'll be more prepared for what lies ahead. Embrace the journey and let it be for better or worse. Enjoy the sun, sand, sea, sweat, and tears.
See the ship in the background – that's the high elements course. My watch was lucky enough to experience that course. Good luck, and may your Outward Bound Singapore experience be as fulfilling as mine was!
