My Journey with the Saxophone: A Musical Adventure

My Journey with the Saxophone: A Musical Adventure

Playing the saxophone has been a lifelong passion for me, one that began in the 1960s when I was in 5th grade. It’s been a journey marked by chance, encouragement, and a deep love for music. Let me share with you how it all started and what led me to become a saxophonist for over five decades.

The Beginnings

My journey with the saxophone began when I was in 5th grade, marking the start of a musical adventure that has lasted over 58 years. Though I can't pinpoint the exact reason why I started playing an instrument, my mom's encouragement played a pivotal role. Moving on, I remember wanting to join the band in my 4th grade year. At the time, I was interested in the clarinet, an instrument often considered 'girlie' at that age. However, things turned out differently.

Choosing the Saxophone

Mr. Wilson, the elementary school band director, examined my hands and noticed that my fingers were shorter and stubbier than what they needed for the clarinet. Consequently, he suggested I play the saxophone. Many years later, I realized that Mr. Wilson might have chosen the saxophone to balance the ratio of clarinet players. It’s a testament to his wisdom, and I’m glad I followed his advice. As they say, the rest is history.

Higher Education and Professional Success

After my positive experience with the saxophone, I pursued higher education and obtained a degree in music, specializing in saxophone. At the age of 68, I am still actively playing the saxophone today. Interestingly, I had the opportunity to play in an Army Band for 11 years. Music has been a constant companion in my life, and it continues to bring joy and fulfillment.

The Father’s Influence

Another key influence in my musical journey was my father. It was rather unconventional bedtime stories he indulged me with, introducing me to the world of Jazz and swing through the radio. Tuned to Radio Luxembourg, the radio played late-night jazz, and I was exposed to this genre even before I turned six. I remember falling in love with the double bass and eventually acquiring a cello from my cousin, who had just passed her grade 8. My father’s encouragement and my innate love for music led me to become a dedicated bassist in my secondary school orchestra.

Continued Passion for Music

Today, at the age of 74, I am still actively playing music. My love for the saxophone has not diminished over the years, and I continue to explore and enjoy the art of playing the instrument. Music is more than just a hobby for me; it's a way to express emotions and connect with people on a deeper level.

Whether it's through the clarinet, cello, or saxophone, music has been a significant part of my life. I believe that the right instrument at the right time can change everything, and that's precisely what happened to me. I strongly recommend exploring different musical instruments and finding the one that resonates with you the most.
