Reflections on Wellness and Resilience During Quarantine

Surviving the Pandemic: PersonalReflections and Lessons Learned

In the twenty months since the global pandemic took hold, many of us have faced unprecedented challenges. Despite the terror and uncertainty surrounding us, I have managed to stay healthy and resilient, all thanks to a combination of good habits, community support, and personal practices.

Staying Healthy and Resilient

The best thing I did was to avoid contracting COVID-19. Throughout the stringent lockdowns, I adhered to health protocols, maintained a balanced diet, and kept a clear head, even as many deaths occurred around me. My rigorous adherence to these practices has been a testament to the protective blessings I believe I received.

However, my journey towards wellness goes beyond just staying healthy. It involves continuous personal development and community involvement. One of the most fulfilling experiences was volunteering at a drive-through vaccine clinic. Despite the challenges of bad weather, I always found enjoyment in my service. It was a humbling experience to witness the gratitude of those who received the vaccinations, and the appreciation from the community was deeply rewarding.

Dedicating Time to Meditation

My most consistent and meaningful practice has been meditation. I started this journey over fifteen years ago, gradually building a routine that now spans more than three hours daily. Retreats offer a more intense immersion, where I can dedicate up to ten hours a day for ten days. These sessions have been profoundly beneficial, helping me develop mindfulness and concentration through Vipassana meditation.

Mindfulness meditation allows me to understand the true nature of my mind and gradually master it. While the process is challenging, I am unafraid. I refuse to succumb to the panic that has rightfully gripped many others. My severe asthma precludes me from wearing masks, and regardless of my age and health conditions, I remain calm and composed.

Adopting a Self-Sufficient Lifestyle

Another significant change during quarantine was my shift towards a self-sufficient lifestyle. I underestimated the workload initially, but it has made me stronger and self-reliant. However, it is worth noting that this lifestyle requires a serious commitment and discipline.

Reflections on Quarantine

For many, quarantine has been a time of stagnation. I haven't accomplished a great deal, but I have found solace in swimming, which has not only kept me fit but also provided a space for reflection. Portrayed as a loner, I have actually made some wonderful friends. Music and band camp have also brought me some joy, albeit under unusual circumstances. Playing the clarinet and the alto sax remains a favorite pastime, and the unconventional schedule of band camp brought its own set of challenges and joys.

Conclusion

Life during quarantine has been a mixture of challenges and silver linings. My greatest accomplishment is staying healthy, but I have also found personal growth through meditation and community service. As the pandemic gradually fades, I hope to carry forward the resilience and mindfulness I have developed. Mediatisation has been a crucial tool, but the real benefits come from consistent practice and an open mind.
