The Heart Tribute to Led Zeppelin’s 'Stairway to Heaven': A Journey Through Music and Admiration
Growing up in the 1970s, I was an avid fan of 'Stairway to Heaven' by Led Zeppelin. As time passed, I found myself gravitating away from the song, much to me liking the components of its construction. I had the privilege of witnessing Jimmy Page perform the instrumental solo twice during his 1988 tour, where I thought it was “the perfect capper to it all.”
Recently, the Heart tribute to this iconic song brought me back to my initial appreciation. I had never watched this specific version before, but I was intrigued, especially considering Ann Wilson’s reputation from their early years. She delivers an admirable performance, and the band as a whole is quite proficient.
The Journey of Heart’s Tribute
Looking back, Heart's version of 'Stairway to Heaven' is a masterful tribute. The inclusion of Shayne Fontaine, who is known for his work with Bruce Springsteen, brings an added layer of authenticity to the performance. Fontaine's guitar work is spirited and brings nods of approval from the three living members of Led Zeppelin. As someone who would have been terrified to play one of Led Zeppelin's signature songs in front of the band, seeing Fontaine perform with such ease is truly impressive.
Personal Reflections on Led Zeppelin
From my perspective, it’s a good song but one that I don’t need to hear again. Occasionally, the song pops up on the radio while I’m driving, and I find myself enjoying the intricate construction of the track. If I’m playing the fourth Led Zeppelin album, I’ll play 'Stairway to Heaven' through alongside the rest of the songs, as it’s an essential part of a great 8-song cycle. Beyoncé’s version of 'Stairway to Heaven' is another interpretation that I’ve appreciated for its unique twist, but it’s always satisfying to go back to the original.
The Band, Drum Kit, and Performance
Another aspect that stood out was the drummer, who is none other than Jason Bonham. My attention was drawn to his performance as he plays on what appears to be Dad’s kit, which is a nice touch. The choir's droog hats are also a subversive element that adds an interesting visual layer to the performance. Overall, the performance by Heart is a fitting tribute that does justice to the original.
Nevertheless, reflecting on why this tribute mattered to me, it’s a blend of respect and admiration. The band's dedication to honoring the spirit of the song while bringing their own unique style to it is commendable. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of 'Stairway to Heaven' and how it has inspired artists across generations.
