What Are K-Pop Fandoms That Never Get Labeled as Toxic But Actually Are?
It's a widely recognized fact that K-Pop fandoms, much like any other fanbase, can exhibit toxic behaviors at certain times. However, there are a few fandoms that often escape the scrutiny and labeling of being toxic. In this article, we will explore two such K-Pop fandoms, MOAs and STAYs, and why they are considered to be among the most chill, despite their propensity for toxic behavior.
Insider Look: MOAs
MOAs, or members of the Aespa fandom, are often labeled as a pretty chill fandom. In fact, many fans and insiders consider them to be generally friendly and supportive. However, beneath this peaceful fa?ade lies a toxic undercurrent. MOAs, much like other fandoms, can indulge in toxic behavior on social media, particularly on Twitter.
A notable incident involved MOAs joining forces with Anti-Tiny Camps (ATINYs) to engage in a heated debate on Twitter. MOAs, especially those affiliated with ARMY (BTS's massive fandom), are known to engage in hate speech directed towards other groups, such as X1. This toxicity is often overlooked because it takes place on platforms like Twitter, which are known for their general toxicity.
Despite their chill perception, MOAs have also been known to attack other members of their own fandom, as well as the Korean entertainment industry in general. For instance, when Hyunjin, a member of Exo, took a hiatus from Exo, MOAs exhibited alarming levels of toxicity, questioning her decision and attacking her publicly.
STAYs: The Forgotten Toxic Fandom
STAYs, the fandom for Stray Kids, often claim to be chill and laid-back. However, appearances can be deceiving. STAYs are known for their excessive behavior, particularly when their favorite groups are away on projects like The Chaos Chapter: Freeze and BTS’ Butter.
One of the most significant challenges that STAYs face is the portrayal of their toxic behavior as a response to Kingdom, a reality show where Stray Kids competed. Many STAYs attacked their own fandom and other groups, citing their support for Kingdom. The reality show stirred controversy, and its impact on STAYs' behavior cannot be understated.
Additionally, when members of the group are away, STAYs often turn inward, attacking fellow fans and even other K-Pop groups. This behavior is often seen as a reaction to perceived betrayal or disappointment.
The Dilemma of Perception in K-Pop Fandoms
It's crucial to note that K-Pop fandoms, including MOAs and STAYs, are not unique in their tendency to exhibit toxic behavior. Every fandom carries a toxic side, even if it's not always visible or acknowledged. The challenge lies in recognizing and addressing these issues within the community, regardless of how chill the fandom may appear to be on the surface.
Understanding the complexities of K-Pop fandoms is essential for fostering healthier communities and promoting positivity. As a K-Pop enthusiast, it's important to be aware of the potential for toxicity and take steps to cultivate a supportive and respectful environment, both within and outside of fandoms.
