Why You Should Embrace Heavy Metal

Why You Should Embrace Heavy Metal

Before asking why you should listen to heavy metal, consider asking why you shouldn't. It's important to explore music genres that align with your interests, whether that be classic rock, jazz, electronic dance music (EDM), or heavy metal. If you're curious about heavy metal, it's merely a matter of preference, not whether it's a ldquo;trendyrdquo; or ldquo;coolrdquo; choice.

Why Give Heavy Metal a Chance?

If you have preconceived notions that heavy metal is somehow subpar or unappealing, it may be worth reconsidering. Spotify offers an extensive range of music genres, including generic hard rock and metal playlists. Perhaps it's time to explore these genres with an open mind and see what resonates with you.

Music as a Form of Personal Expression

Musical preferences are subjective and rooted in personal experiences and tastes. Unless you are studying a particular style for educational or other reasons, it makes little sense to force yourself to listen to music you dislike. However, repeated exposure can help you develop a deeper appreciation for the genre.

Examples of Overcoming Dislikes Through Repeated Listening

One personal example is my journey with the band Deafheaven. Initially, I found the subgenre of Black Metal to be grating, especially with the vocals. Despite enjoying the overall music, the style and vocals were a significant turn-off. However, with persistence, I gave the band another chance. Over the course of 9 months, repeated listening gradually reduced my aversion to the vocals. Today, Deafheaven stands as my second-favorite band in contemporary music.

Challenging Narrow-Minded Opinions

It's also important to challenge the narrow opinions of others who may not understand or appreciate heavy metal. People who dismiss genres or music based on stereotypes or negative preconceptions often demonstrate a lack of critical thinking. Their opinions are often based on narrow perspectives and ignore the diversity within any music genre.

In conclusion, whether you dive into heavy metal with an open mind or prefer other genres, the journey of exploration and self-discovery through music is a valuable experience. Embrace the diversity of music and let your preferences guide you.
