Discovering Hidden Gems: A Journey Through My Current Playlist

Discovering Hidden Gems: A Journey Through My Current Playlist

A journey into the world of music, specifically the songs and albums I have listened to recently, often discovered through a mix of classic hits, new releases, and less mainstream tracks. From The Dur Dur Band’s Dur Dur Band Volume 5 to the Canadian progressive metal band Voivod, my playlist is filled with a diversity of sounds and styles.

Volume 5 by Dur Dur Band

My current listening experience starts with an underground gem from Volume 5 by Dur Dur Band. This album, featuring amazing groovy tunes from Somalia, is a true delight for anyone who enjoys dynamic and catchy music. The best part? You can get up and dance to the beats! This album represents a unique blend of music styles, perfect for any occasion where you need a danceable playlist.

Motionless In White - Slaughterhouse

While I might not typically associate it with an album, Motionless In White's "Slaughterhouse" deserves mention. The two breakdowns in the album are so intense that it ranks among the best on the planet. A breakdown in music, for those unaware, is a short section of the song where all instruments are removed except the rhythm, creating an emotive and impactful moment. This album is deeply moving and a must-listen for fans of the genre.

The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators 1966 and Black Sabbath

A significant portion of my late-night listening includes revisiting classics from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Recently, I have completed side 1 of The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators (1966), a long player that holds a special place in my heart, especially since I had it signed by all members when they played at my uncle’s club in Dallas, Texas, way back in 1966. The museum of my youth! Following this, I dive into Black Sabbath’s "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" (1973), an essential album from the legendary band.

Voivod’s Synchro Anarchy

At the progressive FM radio station during the 1970s, I listened to countless albums, with Voivod’s "Synchro Anarchy" being a standout this year. This brand new album is a fierce and idiosyncratic journey through music, known for its dissonant sounds and science fiction themes. The album is a mix of thrills, bleakness, and odd-metered melodies, showcasing Voivod’s unique style and commitment to creating a truly unique sound.

Current Playlists

My current playlists are a mix of different genres, from the nostalgic feel of Jim Croce to the mellow tunes of Andy Williams. Today, I woke up with Synchro Anarchy playing while I prepared coffee, cleaned the kitchen, only to transition to a playlist of lesser-known but highly enjoyable songs like those from I Don't Know How They Found Me’s "Razzamatazz". For good rock, I gravitate towards artists like The Black Moods, Dirty Honey, The Jacks, BRKN Love, and The Pale White.

The Open Door by Evanescence is another must-listen, especially “Bring Me To Life” from their “Fallen” album. Evanescence remains a favorite band, with I especially admire Amy Lee's captivating and powerful vocals, making her the only original band member in my opinion!

Exploring diverse sounds is a vital part of my musical journey, from the underground grooves of Dur Dur Band to the intense breakdowns of Motionless In White, and from the psychedelic sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators to the unique experiences of Voivod, I am always looking forward to the next discovery and the joy it brings.
