Reflections on Modern Music: A Timeless Debate

For several years, the idea of comparing modern music to that of old times was seen as absurd.

Personal Evolution in Musical Perspective

A few years ago, I would have dismissed any comparison between modern and old music as nonsense. However, my stance has shifted significantly. Nowadays, I do not hold an opinion about contemporary music, except for non-American genres, since I no longer immerse myself in today's musical landscape. It is through personal experience that insight is gained. Without engaging with contemporary music myself, it would be inappropriate to label any piece of it as 'wack' or otherwise.

The Quality of Modern Music

Currently, I perceive the majority of modern music as fleeting and superficial. Most tracks that gain popularity in the present are often discarded or abandoned once their novelty wears off. They are often downloaded or bought due to being 'trending' for a while, but the fervor soon diminishes, leading to most people deleting them or donating their CDs to charities such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. This trend then makes way for other new tracks to come to the forefront.

Action and Artistry

During my formative years, the 70s and 80s, the music scene was bustling with talented artists who continue to be celebrated to this day. The mess that dominates the 2000s, by contrast, seems to lack memorability and the quality to endure. While talent was a paramount factor in music in the past, it has largely taken a back seat to the performative aspect of contemporary artists.

Modern Music: A Fickle Phenomenon

Even though modern music is characterized by its variability and accessibility, especially for those in the boomer, Gen X, and millennial age groups, it still holds vastly different qualities from its historical counterparts. As I have moved past the age of 50, my preference naturally gravitates towards the rich tapestry of music from yesteryear. Nonetheless, equally compelling music from modern artists can still be discovered with the right mindset and curiosity.

Evolution of Music Accessibility

Contrary to what some may argue, modern music is becoming better and more diverse, offering a plethora of genres including chill wave, field recordings, Middle Eastern-influenced rock, witch house, break core, accordion music, and more. The advent of platforms like YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and improvements in recording technology through smartphones have significantly enhanced the availability of music. It is easier to share songs with someone halfway around the world than it was to connect with a neighbor in the past.

Conclusion:

The zenith of music can be experienced today, and the accessibility and variety in musical styles are among the many reasons to appreciate modern music. Each era brings its unique contribution to the world of music, and while some may yearn for the ‘good old days,’ it is important to recognize the enduring impact and evolution of contemporary music.
